New Recommendations!

Hi all,
sorry about the lack of suggestions but it seems like everyone is busy these days!! Mary forwarded some recommended reading from a fellow DA employee. These are three of her favorite books by the same author. She has highly suggested these....

"The Birth of Venus", "In the Company of a Courtesan" and "Sacred Heart" by Sarah Dunant.

"The Frightened Man" by Kenneth Cameron

This is a departure from what I am used to reading but I'd figure I'd try something new.

The frightened man is a mystery about the revival of Jack the Ripper. It takes place in London, of course, and is set in the early 1900's or late 1800's is my guess. This case is grudgingly taken on by a 'Sherlock Holmes' type of character, although he is an American in this book. The book is intriguing and you won't see the end coming. It lacks the creepy atmosphere that comes with mystery books BUT Cameron does make his characters real. I can actually picture them in my mind in certain situations.

I did get a bit confused with the dialogue in the beginning because Cameron kind of throws you into the story with no warning. All in all it was a good read and I have decided to read the sequel called "The Bohemian Girl".

"The Overnight Socialite" by Bridie Clark

If you like My Fair Lady you will like this book. It is very similiar (if not the same) storyline as the movie. I love those kinds of plots so the book was a fun read for me.

The charachters are cute and easy to follow. I'm a sucker for books with a successful makeover. If you are looking for a light fun read, this will be it. Of course it is a bit predictable but again, entertaining.

A little note

If you have a book in mind that you are unsure if you want to read-let me know. I can read it and give it a review OR perhaps someon has read it and would gladly review it for you.

Happy Halloween all!!

And of course, Happy Reading!

"Lima Nights" by Marie Arana

This book is a feast for the senses. The author, Marie Arana, is a master at describing the atmosphere and emotions in this book. The surroundings are vibrant with color and music and the characters are so real, it makes you feel their desire, pain, and loneliness.

This book is about a married man who falls in love with the young girl in Lima, Peru. It's a story about this unlucky relationship and the consequenses of these two charachters desires. It then flashes forward 20 years and we see how the couple is surviving after all these years. We realize that there were motives to this relationship. Its a sad book but very engrossing, you won't want to put it down-just to see what happens when the affair is discovered.

"Insatiable" by Meg Cabot

For those of you who aren't familiar with Meg Cabot-she is the author of all the Princess Diaries books, as well as some Chick Lit (ie, Queen of Babble series, etc). I normally love her books, they are funny, witty and a fun read. Not so with this book. This was her first try at paranormal romance and it wasn't pretty.

"Insatiable" is a twist on the Dracula/Mina storyline except it is happening in present day. The story, for me, was a slow read (and I LOVE vampire books). The storyline was a bit boring and the charachters not interesting. I didn't feel the emotion or the thrill that normally comes with good paranormal thriller books. I did finish the book since I am not one to leave a story unfinished. It turns out there will be a sequel and I'm not that interested.

Very disappointing-she should stick to what she knows best.
